The Cannabis plant has played a vital role in wellness for centuries. Although medical marijuana use is on the rise, humans have always relied on cannabis for its health benefits. As the research catches up to the legacy of the cannabis plant, science is confirming what people have always known and understood.  Cannabis is a sophisticated plant, one that defends itself against pests, produces multiple chemical compounds and can heal a variety of ailments.

Every plant in nature produces essential oils. These oils contribute to a plant’s scent and, when appropriate, its flavor. Essential oils, which are distilled from flowers, leaves, stems, the bark or roots of a specific plant, contained terpenes, aldehydes, esters, alcohols and other chemical molecules. It has been demonstrated that essential oils have an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. Moreover, research has reported that essential oils also have a certain anticancer effect.

Essential oils have become commonplace, and are now accepted as a supplement to an individual’s health care routine. Even drugstores, grocery stores and everywhere in between carry variations of plant essential oils and products containing oils to improve health. Just like all other plants, the cannabis plant produces and excretes beneficial essential oils. These essential oils are called Terpenes, and while research is still evolving, science has proven that these oils can drastically improve a patient’s quality of life.

Cannabis and its terpenes synchronize their chemical effects by working concurrently. There are over 200 confirmed terpenes within the plant world, and each plant variety produces a unique effect. Because of terpenes, each cannabis strain possesses a distinct taste and scent. Terpenes are aromatic molecules which are produced within the glands of cannabis flowers and buds. Some scents are considered sweet and fruity while other Terpenes are woodsy, pungent, earthy or skunky. While terpenes give each cannabis strain a unique scent and flavor, these chemical compounds also contribute to the therapeutic effects that patient’s feel.

Terpineol is a commonly found in lime/citrus blossoms, lilacs, pine trees and eucalyptus sap. It is known for its calming effect and its antifungal properties. Terpineol is useful in pain reduction especially with inflammation. Patients suffering from fibromyalgia or other nerve-related conditions may find terpineol to be effective. This article published in the International Journal of Oncology states that terpineol helps reduce the size of tumor cells.

This study published by the Molecular Diversity Preservation International reported that “The antibacterial activity and antioxidant effect of the compounds α-terpineol, linalool, eucalyptol and α-pinene obtained from essential oils (EOs), against pathogenic and spoilage forming bacteria were determined.”

Some of the popular strains which possess terpineol: Jack Herer, OG Kush, and Girl Scout Cookies

Patients should speak with their certified medical marijuana physician to determine which strains and methods of consumption are most appropriate for their medical conditions. The Medical Marijuana Treatment Center staff are trained to answer your specific questions once your medical marijuana card is approved and active. It’s important that patients find a routine that is effective in treating specific ailments and concerns.
