Cannabis has been used for thousands of years as a medicinal aid to treatment numerous ailments. The entire cannabis plant is beneficial. There is archeological evidence that proves that humans have used cannabis for at least 10,000 years; recorded history, for at least 5,000 years.

Cannabis has been a source of food, fuel, paper, and building materials, a textile fiber, and a folk medicine remedy for thousands of years. THC and CBD are two popular cannabinoids, and have been used medicinally for centuries. But now, science has proven that there’s far more to the cannabis plant than just those two beneficial compounds. Cannabis also has terpenes. Terpenes are can be thought of like the essential oils of the cannabis plant. These oils emit scents and flavors which contribute to the plant’s efficacy.

Terpenes are the chemical compounds within the cannabis plant that work concurrently with cannabinoids. The terpenes are responsible for the aroma, flavor and the specific effects within each cannabis strain. Science is discovering just how beneficial the whole cannabis plant can be as terpenes possess their own benefits.

Cannabis and its terpenes synchronize their chemical effects by working concurrently. There are over 140 confirmed Terpenes within the plant world, and each plant variety produces a unique effect. Because of terpenes, each cannabis strain possesses a distinct taste and scent. Terpenes are aromatic molecules which are produced within the glands of cannabis flowers and buds. Some scents are considered sweet and fruity while other terpenes are woodsy, pungent, earthy or skunky. While terpenes give each cannabis strain a unique scent and flavor, these chemical compounds also contribute to the therapeutic effects that patient’s feel.

Essential Oils have become commonplace and accepted as a supplement to an individual’s health care routine. Even drugstores, grocery stores and everywhere in between carry variations of plant essential oils and products containing oils to improve health. Just like all other plants, the cannabis plant produces and excretes beneficial essential oils. These essential oils are called terpenes, and while research is still evolving, science has proven that these oils can drastically improve a patient’s quality of life.

Farnesene is one of over 140 confirmed terpenes that naturally occur in cannabis. It also occurs in many other plants too as terpenes are found within the plant world. Farnesene is commonly found in the coating of apple skins.  Farnesene naturally occurs in: Apple, orange, grapefruit juice, mandarin and lime peel, grape, pear, ginger, nutmeg and basil. Farnesene is known to be present in Turmeric which is relied upon for its anti-inflammatory effects. Farnesene is also known to be a natural insect repellent.
